Russian Missile Cruiser Variag Heads to Pacific

Russian warships started on Wednesday moving to the Indian Ocean, spokesman of the leadership of the Russian Pacific Fleet Colonel Roman Martov said. The fleet consists of Variag-type missile cruiser, SB-522 Navy Tanker and Boris Botoma carrier. According to Martov, the fleet will enter the South China Sea in the near future, while missile cruiser Variag will enter the Gulf of Aden area in early October. On their way, Russian ships will visit the ports of Sri Lanka, he indicated. Martov also noted that a group of 5 vessels, belonging to the Russian Pacific Fleet and led by anti-submarine vessel Admiral Pantilyev, has been implementing tasks in the Mediterranean region for five months. The fleet left its base of Vladivostok in March last year to form the nucleus of  Russian Navy ships in the Mediterranean, he added. The spokesman said that two Russian landing ships Berisvi and Admiral Nevelsqui which accomplished their missions in Mediterranean are moving now to the Russian port of Novorossiysk in the Black Sea. “Ten Russian warships of the Pacific Fleet are currently functioning in various regions of the global ocean,” Martov went on to say.   http://www.almanar.com.lb/english/adetails.php?eid=111109&frid=22&seccatid=45&cid=22&fromval=1

Russia’s Moskva missile cruiser, dubbed a “carrier-killer” by NATO, has passed through the Straits of Gibraltar and is now heading toward the eastern Mediterranean to assume command of the Russian naval force there.

The Russian Navy said in a statement that the Moskva cruiser passed through the Straits of Gibraltar on September 10.

Interfax news agency added that the Moskva cruiser, “commanded by Sergey Tronev, Captain 1st Rank of the Guards… has enough room for maneuver now.”

“The Black Sea flagship entered the Russian Navy’s area of responsibility in the Mediterranean at 11:00 pm Moscow time yesterday,” the agency reported a military source as saying.

The missile-carrying cruiser is expected to join its final destination in eastern Mediterranean on September 15 or 16.

Upon arrival, the command of the Russian Navy unit in the Mediterranean, currently stationed onboard the Admiral Panteleyev anti-submarine ship, will be relocated to the Moskva.

“The armaments and technical equipment of the missile cruiser are in working condition. The crew is ready to perform combat missions,” the source said.

Russia Sends 1 More Warship to Mediterranean Sea Fleet – Official

MOSCOW, September 6 (RIA Novosti) – Russia will send another warship to the Mediterranean Sea next week, a high-ranking Russian Navy official told RIA Novosti Friday.

The Kashin-class guided missile destroyer Smetlivy from the Black Sea Fleet is due to leave the port of Sevastopol on September 12-14, the official said, adding that it is to join the Mediterranean task force “on a rotational basis.”

A group of warships, including the large amphibious landing ships Novocherkassk and Minsk, as well as the electronic intelligence ship Priazovye joined the Mediterranean fleet earlier on Friday, he said.

He also said the Slava class guided missile cruiser Moskva will reach the Mediterranean Sea, where it will take over from the Admiral Panteleyev destroyer, on September 17, and on September 29 the missile boat Ivanovets and the guided missile ship Sthil will reach an area off the Syrian coast.
