NBC’s Pete Williams Identifies Navy Yard Gunman As Aaron Alexis, 34, of Ft. Worth, TX

by Noah Rothman | 2:50 pm, September 16th, 2013 video

NBC News reporter Pete Williams identified one of the gunman who attacked the Washington Navy Yard on Monday morning as Aaron Alexis, 34, of Ft. Worth, Texas. Alexis was killed at the scene, but police have asked for Washington D.C. residents to remain on the lookout for two additional suspects.

“There’s only one confirmed gunman and authorities say he’s 34-year-old Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth, Texas,” Williams reported. “That he had just recently begun working as a civilian contractor for the Navy.

Williams noted that reports indicate Aaron infiltrated the highly secure facility by using the identification of a current employee of the facility who has not yet been identified.
“What his motive was is a long way from determined,” Williams continued.

A Scandal Bigger Than Benghazi?

Extortion-17In a story that has remained largely under the mainstream media radar, Congress announced late last month that it would finally investigate the Aug. 6, 2011 helicopter crash in Afghanistan that resulted in 38 deaths, including 22 members of SEAL Team 6, made famous three months earlier when they killed Osama Bin Laden. Grieving family members insist that soldiers in the elite unit were placed in unnecessary danger by the recklessness of the Obama administration, whose actions they characterized as criminal. “We’re going to dive into this,” said Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee on National Security.

The families of the slain soldiers have every right to be furious. SEAL Team 6 is a covert unit whose operations are ostensibly classified. As a result, it has never been revealed which members of the team were involved in the killing of the terrorist mastermind, or how many of those same men were among those killed when the Chinook helicopter in which they were traveling was shot down by Taliban terrorists.

The focus of the families’ fury and shock, along with that of SEAL Team 6 members themselves, was the administration’s desire to tout their success in killing Bin Laden — compromising the safety of the unit in the process. Only two days after the raid, Vice President Biden gave a speech at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Washington, D.C. “Let me briefly acknowledge tonight’s distinguished honorees: Adm. Jim Stavridis is a — is the real deal; he could tell you more about and understands the incredible, the phenomenal, the just almost unbelievable capacity of his Navy SEALS and what they did last — last Sunday,” Mr. Biden revealed to audience members gathered for the 50th anniversary of the Atlantic Council, an international affairs think tank.

What followed was a testament to Biden’s disturbing ability to speak before thinking. “And what was even more extraordinary was — and I’m sure former administration officials will appreciate this more than anyone — there was such an absolute, overwhelming desire to accomplish this mission that although for over several months we were in the process of planning it, and there were as many as 16 members of Congress who were briefed on it, not a single, solitary thing leaked. I find that absolutely amazing,” Biden added, apparently oblivious to the reality that he had just perpetrated one of the more egregious leaks of national security information in recent history.

As a result, SEAL Team 6 members realized they had a target painted on their backs. That reality was hammered home in a May 10, 2013 Fox News interview with Karen and Billy Vaughn, whose son Aaron was killed in the chopper crash. Karen spoke first. “As soon as Joe Biden announced that it was a SEAL Team who took out Bin Laden, within 24 hours, my son called me and I rarely ever heard him sound afraid in his adult life….He said, ‘Mom, you need to wipe your social media clean…your life is in danger, our lives are in danger, so clean it up right now’,” she revealed.

Billy Vaughn took on Biden in no uncertain terms. “The media has let this man get away with saying ‘Uncle Joe’s gaffes, Uncle Joe’s gaffes,” he fumed. “This is not Uncle Joe and he’s not some senile old grandfather. He is the second in command of the most powerful country in the world and he needs to take responsibility for the comments he makes and quit being given a pass.”

Charles Strange, the father of slain SEAL Michael Strange, was also furious. During a family conference with reporters at the National Press Club in Washington a day earlier, Strange recounted his exchange with President Obama at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Aug. 9, 2011. Strange noted that, despite Obama saying he would look “very, very, very deep into this,” he never heard from the president again. In an exchange with radio host Michael Savage last month, Strange took it one step further. He claimed his son told him, “Something’s going on with the team. Somebody’s leaking things out. Something’s going on.” Savage asked: “Your son knew he was being sent to his death?” Strange’s response was chilling. “They knew,” he answered. “They knew something was up. Every one of them.”

The military has provided more than 1,000 pages of documentation to the parents. Those documents contain the Defense Department’s assertion that they don’t believe the  SEALs were targeted following the Bin Laden operation. Moreover in a transcript, a Defense Department official disputes the families’ assertion that the helicopter was brought down by an “established ambush,” contending it was “a lucky shot of a low-level fighter” who “happened to be in the right spot.”

The families aren’t buying that assessment, and they are extremely troubled by other questions surrounding the case as well. Of the 38 people killed in the crash, seven were members of the Afghan National Army. They were replaced at the last minute by other Afghan military officials who were not on the flight manifest, raising the possibility the replacements were Taliban infiltrators.

The military claimed that when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down, the bodies were badly burned and had to be cremated. Charles Strange believes the military is lying. “I saw Mike’s dead body,” he said in an interview. “It was clearly recognizable. He was clutching his gun. He wasn’t burned to a crisp. Why did they cremate my boy? They didn’t need to do that. Something’s not right.” Rep. Chaffetz, who said he saw a photo of a deceased SEAL, echoed that assertion. “The body I saw didn’t need to be cremated,” he said.

The military claims the helicopter’s black box was never recovered because it was washed away in a flash flood. Yet flash floods in that area of Afghanistan are extremely rare.

Furthermore, the families want to know why their sons were flown into a hot combat zone in a helicopter made in the 1960s. They want to know why such a large group of SEALS was put on a single aircraft and why no aerial backup was deployed, which is standard military procedure when special forces are involved. And they want to know why, during a funeral ceremony held at Bagram Air Base in Kabul, a Muslim cleric was allowed to recite a prayer condemning the American “infidels” to eternal damnation.

Police in Houston stand down in face of protestors

Houstonians rally against Zimmerman acquittal

Protesters block part of Texas 288
By Mike Glenn | July 15, 2013 | Updated: July 15, 2013 11:28pm

“Our motto today is: We’re fired up and we’re not going to take it anymore,” said community activist Quanell X.

The rally began about 7 p.m. at Byrd Funeral Home, 2517 Wheeler, near the campus of Texas Southern University. Organizers said that location was picked for a reason.

“This is where they wish to send young black men – to the funeral home,” Quanell X said.

It was a dramatic theme that was repeated along the march route with protesters solemnly pushing a casket behind a hearse.

Bianca Fisher said she wasn’t particularly surprised that the jury set Zimmerman free.

“The mission of the judicial system is to enslave black people,” she said.

Benita Gordon brought her son, Devon, to the protest, which lasted about 90 minutes.

“We’re walking tonight for Trayvon,” she said. “We need fair rules all the way around.”

Marchers shut down southbound traffic along Texas 288 at Southmore for about 10-15 minutes. No police were seen. The crowds allowed an ambulance to pass, but other motorists were forced to wait.

“It’s civil disobedience. The people are angry and have a right to be angry,” Quanell X said.

Video of Vancouver riots being passed off as Miami after Zimmerman acquittal

Clip of 2011 Stanley Cup riots erroneously shared on social media following verdict in Trayvon Martin case

Many people worried there would be widespread rioting in American cities if George Zimmerman walked out of a Florida courtroom a free man. And some were all too willing Saturday night to spread that fear.

Following the not guilty verdict in the Trayvon Martin case, in which neighbourhood watch captain Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder charges, a misleading video made the rounds online apparently depicting a riot in progress in Miami.

The video, first uploaded to YouTube and later reposted at World Star Hip Hop, was shared tens of thousands of times on Saturday night. However, the video actually depicted part of the 2011 Vancouver riots, which shook that city following the Vancouver Canucks’ loss to the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals.

Most Canadians would have recognized the video’s location immediately since whoever shot the original footage mentions Vancouver’s Granville Street, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and suggests the police should go “all Dziekański” on the rioters — a reference to the death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekański, whose death at the Vancouver airport in 2007 made national headlines.

The video going around of riots in Miami is FAKE. There are NO mountains in Miami. It is from Vancouver, Canada in 2011 after Stanley Cup.—
Michael Skolnik (@MichaelSkolnik) July 14, 2013

But to an American listener, those cues may well have gotten lost. Shot from a distance, the only thing clearly visible in the video is a sea of people clogging a street as a fire burns in the distance. The narrator’s suggestion that “hopefully the police are cracking skulls tonight” and insistence that “this is one of the only times that I approve of police brutality” would also have enraged many Americans who feel the verdict was unjust.

Although some people on Twitter tried to point out the truth, many others continued to spread the false rumour that there was a riot in Miami. There were no Zimmerman-related riots reported in any American cities as of this writing.

There are also no mountains in Miami.

Voting Rights basically killed by Supreme Court: Now what?

Look for some states to step up their efforts to suppress minority voter turnout.

WASHINGTON, June 26, 2013 — With states still finding ways to restrict voting, particularly in the South, by making it difficult to vote, it was hard to believe that the United States Supreme Court by a 5-4 vote would strike out the key provisions of the Voting Rights Act. But on Tuesday it did just that, effectively gutting the historic measure.

What it means is that all bets are now off since the Supremes have basically said all is well and the era of discrimination at the ballot box is over. After all, we have an African American president, don’t we, and a bunch of Southern black mayors.

The Supreme Court ruled that Congress has not given adequate justification for continuing federal oversight of the nine states, mostly in the South. Have the five Justices, who supported Shelby County, Ala. contention, read the new tactics that are now being employed to suppress voter participation? Makes you wonder how they missed these biggies in restricting the right to vote:

1. Stricter voter ID laws with photo identification, a hardship on many minorities as well as the elderly and the poor.

2. Gerrymandering districts by race as was done in Texas, though temporarily stopped by federal judges.

3. Shortchanging minority districts with not enough voting machines, effectively making prohibitively long lines to vote.

So what were the Five Supremes thinking? A look at the written majority decision reveals a lot.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the law is “based on 40-year-old facts having no relationship to the present day. Congress — if it is to divide the states — must identify those jurisdictions to be singled out on a basis that makes sense in light of current conditions. It cannot simply rely on the past.”

But the Voting Rights Act is not a 40-year-old relic, but was renewed again in 2006 when then-President George W. Bush and a strong bipartisan majority in both Houses of Congress agreed that such legislation was still necessary to protect the right to vote and that, according to the 15th Amendment, that right could not be abridged on the basis of “race, color, or previous condition servitude.”
