Exhibiting magical thinking that totally belies the logic driving his “Star Trek: The Next Generation” character, the android Data, actor Bent Spiner inserted himself into the “gun control debate on his Twitter feed yesterday.

“So we didn’t pass the assault weapons ban,” Spiner volunteered.

“Makes sense,” he added sarcastically. “Why ban the things that make ours a responsible society?”

When asked how bans on drugs and prostitution have worked out, Spiner replied “So, in your opinion, nothing should be banned? No laws?

“Okay, from what I’m getting guns aren’t the problem,” he continued. “Drugs aren’t the problem. Alcohol is not a problem. People are the problem. Ban People!”

“Really, what’s a few thousand a year?” Spiner asked when the opinion was offered that “You don’t ban a tool just because a few rotten apples occasionally misuse it.”

Unfortunately for his argument, the … uh … data does not support his presumption.
