China’s ambassador to the UK says recent protests are harmful and don’t work in Hong Kong, saying that street politics only brings “turmoil and chaos”

China has dismissed growing calls in Hong Kong for greater democracy, describing an enormous protest march at beginning of July as “street politics” that will only bring “turmoil and chaos”.

Liu Xiaoming, China’s ambassador to the UK, rejected calls in Hong Kong for the public to be allowed to nominate candidates for the city’s next mayor, known locally as the chief executive.

“I have worked for many years in Britain and the US,” he wrote in the Financial Times. “To my knowledge no British prime minister or American president has been selected through ‘public nomination’.”
