Walmart EBT Chaos Exemplifies Systemic Risk

I will point out I’ve been working on a book and it mentions this very specific thing in passing as a possible “trigger”. Looks like it actually happened.

Many of us have heard, seen, or read about the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system glitches this weekend, and the havoc that the situation brought about many regions throughout the United States. It has been a reaffirmation of how quickly things would become desperate and chaotic if we were to experience a collapse of systems which support life as we know it today.

Here’s what happened at two Walmarts in Louisiana when word spread that they were experiencing EBT glitches…

Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that allows state welfare departments to issue benefits via a magnetically encoded payment card. Through EBT, a recipient uses his/her EBT card to make purchases at participating retailers.
